For centuries, nature has been a source of critical medication, from willow bark to mosquitoes. Medical researchers are already preparing for what might be the world's largest biodiversity loss ever. From genes to ecosystems, biodiversity contributes to the diversity of life on Earth, providing us with the resources we need to live a long and healthy life.
Many vital species are on the verge of extinction, according to Dr. Cassandra Quave, an ethnobotanist at Emory University. According to the World Health Organization, flowering plants provide 11 percent of the world's important medications, while the fungus that grows on sloths' hair could be utilized to treat parasites, infections, and cancer. Plants, fungus, and DNA are being preserved in seed banks by scientists at the Kew Foundation in order to safeguard the life of species and modern medicine.
These same experts are urging Gen Z and Millennials to improve their everyday behaviors by paying attention to the creatures around them before it's too late. You can donate to a well-known research conservation near you if you have a certain cause in mind. It's often the small actions that can make a big difference in our ecosystems, such as picking up garbage on the sidewalk or composting old food.
