Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson was unanimously denied medical release by the Illinois Prisoner Review Board on Friday. Just six months ago, Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting and killing 36-year-old Sonya Massey in her kitchen.
Massey’s mother addressed supporters after the hearing: “Every day a Black person gets killed, pulled over, or beat down – young women, Black women, people of childbearing age. It’s like they’re trying to get rid of us.”
Grayson, who has stage 4 cancer, filed for compassionate release after serving less than a year of his sentence. In his application he reiterated claims that Massey, who had called 911 for help, "attacked" him with a pot of boiling water after she called 911 for help.
