The FBI's Plan for AI 'Pre-Crime' Policing

Investigative reporter Daniel Boguslaw breaks down how the proposed FBI Threat Screening Center would use “predictive” artificial intelligence technology to expand its watch lists. Boguslaw’s reporting reveals a skyrocketing number of US citizens the Bureau is tracking, based on “foreign agent” designations laid out in NSPM-7’s broad criminalization of speech and political affiliation.

But “predictive” crime systems don’t work: Boguslaw points to the Boston Marathon bomber, the Pulse nightclub shooter, and January 6 participants who were on the FBI’s watch list — even without AI. He says expanded surveillance isn’t a uniquely Trump-era threat, and that despite sitting members of Congress being blacklisted by Marco Rubio’s Cuba report, lawmakers on both sides aren’t doing enough to check the growing abuse of power.
