When United Flight 1093 departed Denver bound for Los Angeles, it was supposed to be a routine flight. But somewhere high above Utah, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 suddenly took a hit — and the windshield cracked. The pilots quickly declared an emergency and diverted to Salt Lake City, landing safely with no loss of pressurization.

In this video, Captain Steeeve breaks down what’s now believed to have caused that mid-air impact — a high-altitude weather balloon launched by a Silicon Valley startup that lost contact with its system around the same time. Steeeve explains how collisions like this can happen, what kind of damage even a lightweight object can cause at 500 mph, and how pilots are trained to react instantly to unexpected impacts at cruise.

He also dives into how the NTSB investigates incidents like this, how cockpit windshields are built to handle impacts, and why this could lead to new discussions about regulating high-altitude balloon operations.
