On August 29, 2026, two Airlink Embraer jets performed an incredibly low formation flyover of DHL Stadium in Cape Town ahead of the Springboks vs. All Blacks rugby match.
And when we say low... we mean LOW.
Tracking estimates suggested the lead aircraft may have passed only around 41–46 feet above the stadium roof, with approximately 56,000 spectators below.
Airlink says the flyover was carefully planned, rehearsed, and approved by South Africa’s aviation authorities. The airline also says its flight recorder data shows the aircraft remained within their authorized altitude and speed limits.
But after video of the flyover went viral, serious questions were raised about the amount of safety margin involved. The South African Civil Aviation Authority has now obtained the flight data and is reviewing the operation.
Captain Steeeve breaks down the flyover from a professional pilot’s perspective: how these events are planned, what happens when you fly a transport-category aircraft this close to the ground, and perhaps most importantly — what margin do you have when something doesn’t go according to plan?
