On August 15, 2026, Vietnam Airlines Flight VN34 was attempting to depart Munich, Germany for Hanoi aboard a Boeing 787-9.
But something wasn't right.
During the takeoff roll, the aircraft reportedly struggled to accelerate normally. VN34 continued down the runway, eventually reaching the end of the paved surface and suffering a tail strike as the crew managed to get the aircraft airborne.
Once in the air, the crew received indications of damage and remained near Munich for roughly two hours while dumping fuel and preparing to return.
The 787 eventually landed safely, but the aircraft had suffered significant damage, including damage to the rear fuselage and multiple tires.
In this episode, retired airline captain and naval aviator Captain Steeeve reacts to the ATC audio and breaks down just how serious this situation was — including what pilots are thinking as they approach V1, why rejecting a takeoff at high speed can be extremely dangerous, what causes a tail strike, and what happens when an aircraft isn't performing the way the crew expects during the takeoff roll.
The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.
