Shocking CCTV footage from Nepal and Tibet shows a wall of water and mud hitting buildings at a border crossing in Gyirong County. Villages, roads and bridges have been washed away, with buildings and vehicles buried under tons of mud.
It’s not clear how the disaster started, with reports of a glacial ice and rock avalanche just before terrifying waves of water came down the river valley. Thousands of homes are flooded or destroyed. Hundreds of foreign tourists are reported missing, including 33 from Britain.
An enormous rescue and relief operation is underway, led by the Nepalese military, with the Chinese government also mounting operations on the Tibetan side of the border, with hundreds also missing there.
