Mr Modi has met President Pranab Mukherjee and formally claimed his right to form the government after his BJP won a landslide victory in the general election.
The BJP's 282 members of parliament elected Mr Modi as the leader of the parliamentary party at a meeting today.
Mr Modi has been holding a series of meetings to finalize his cabinet.
Given the margin of victory, the BJP will be able to govern without coalition partners - 272 MPs are required for an absolute majority.
A group of senior ministers are also expected to be sworn in at the ceremony which will be held at the presidential palace.
