Yet they all offer security, prestige and privacy at a premium. Nationally, these homes on average cost about 5%-10% more than similar non-gated homes in the same areas. While gated communities typically have higher property values, they also come with a homeowner’s association that imposes monthly property fees in addition to enforcing policies. CNBC visited three gated communities in Palm Beach County, Florida, to see how these have evolved and whether they’re worth the premium.
