2:51Now PlayingThis is the Mossberg 990 SPX short barrel shotgun.
Twelve gauge.
Semi-auto.
Fourteen and three quarter inch barrel.
And I think it might be the ultimate home defense shotgun.
I’ll be honest: I did this backwards. I fell in love with this gun first, then went looking for reasons to justify it.
But every reason held up.
Most shotguns are huge. They look cool, but once you pick one up, there is just so much gun in your hands. It feels like being handed a canoe and told to defend a hallway with it.
The Mossberg 990 SPX feels different.
It is shorter, lighter, better balanced, and it moves exactly where I point it. Whatever extra pop you get from the short barrel is completely overshadowed by how well this thing handles.
Buckshot is manageable.
Slugs are a different animal.
But the big story here is not recoil.
It is handling.
This shotgun feels more natural, more organic, and more usable inside the kind of spaces where a home-defense shotgun actually has to work.
And the light setup is what really made me take it seriously.
On a full-length shotgun, the light is way out at the end of the world, hard to reach, awkward to activate, and sitting behind a long barrel throwing shadows everywhere.
On this, the light sits right where my hand already is.
Thumb.
Switch.
Done.
At two in the morning, in your own house, in the dark, identifying what is in front of you before you do anything about it is the whole ballgame.
Yes, you give up capacity.
Six rounds instead of eight.
But I’ll take six rounds in a shotgun that fits my house over eight rounds in a canoe.
The punchline is that owning what might be the most sensible home defense shotgun in America means paperwork, a tax stamp, a background check, and waiting on permission.
Do the paperwork anyway.
It is worth it.
This is my favorite Mossberg shotgun to date.
No hesitation.
No asterisk.
My little mama.
