Gun Range Flock Cameras Are Building A List Whether You Know It Or Not

Somebody bolted cameras to a pole at a gun range.

Not aimed at the street.

Aimed at the driveway.

Close enough to read every plate that pulls in.

And that should make every gun owner stop and ask a very simple question:

Who owns that camera?

Because a license plate is not just a license plate.

A plate can become a name.

A name can become an address.

And once you start logging which cars show up to a gun range, how often they show up, and how long they stay, you have the beginnings of a gun-owner list without anyone ever passing a registry law.

Now, there may be an innocent explanation.

Gun range parking lots can be targets for theft, and range owners may want cameras to protect customers. That argument exists.

But the problem is trust.

Americans do not trust the government with surveillance power because the government has not earned that trust.

CNN recently reported on police misuse of Flock camera systems, including a Milwaukee case where an officer allegedly used the system to track a romantic partner over and over again.

That is the problem.

The system may be sold as a crime-fighting tool, but once the database exists, the question becomes who gets access to it and what they decide to do with it.

Now put that same system at a gun range.

A soft database of gun owners gets built automatically.

Nobody needs paperwork.

Nobody needs a signature.

Nobody needs a registry bill.

Just a pole, a lens, and your driveway.

So next time you go to your range, ask who owns the camera at the entrance, how long the data is stored, and who it gets handed to.

If nobody behind the counter knows, that might be your answer.
