The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission met at Norfolk State University in September for their 2010 Signature Conference. Several topics are discussed on the experiences of both enslaved and free African Americans during the Civil War. The theme of the conference is "Race, Slavery and the Civil War: The Tough Stuff of American History and Memory." In afternoon session of the conference historians discussed the experiences of both enslaved and free blacks during the Civil War.
