Washington Today (11-16-23): Ethics Committee finds 'substantial evidence' Rep. Santos broke the law

House Ethics Committee says it found "substantial evidence" Rep. George Santos (R-NY) broke the law by stealing money from his campaign, deceiving donors about how contributions would be used, engaging in fraudulent business dealings and filing false campaign finance reports..

The Ethics Committee says Rep. Santos "warrants public condemnation", and the Committee Chair says he will introduce a resolution to expel Rep. Santos.

Rep. Santos calls the Ethics Committee report a “disgusting politicized smear” and says he is being “stoned by those who have flaws themselves.”

There will be no government shutdown after the Senate passes a short-term funding extension late Wednesday night. It is a bill that already had passed the House and will be signed into law by President Joe Biden before the Friday midnight deadline.

U.S. Capitol Police put out a statement after Wednesday night's clash with pro-Palestinian protesters outside the Democratic national Committee headquarters in Washington: "When demonstrations cross the line into illegal activity it is our responsibility to maintain order and ensure people’s safety."

But one of the groups that organized the demonstration says it was the police who "rushed in, threw us down the stairs, and pepper sprayed us."

President Biden told business leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco, on his four-hour meeting Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, his aim is to "responsibly manage the competition" between the two countries.
