Washington Today (6-5-24): Senate votes not to advance bill to make contraception a guaranteed right

The Senate fails to advance a bill to guarantee access to contraception by a vote of 51-39, short of the 60 votes needed. Two Republicans voted yes – Susan Collins (ME) and Lisa Murkowski (AK). Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) changed his vote from yes to no to allow him to call for a revote in the future.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) says on the House floor, "A so-called leader has made the factually inaccurate statement that Black folks were better off during Jim Crow....How dare you make such an ignorant observation?" Rep. Jeffries was referring to reported comments by Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) at a Donald Trump campaign event in Philadelphia. Rep. Donalds responded in a video that what he said was that there were more Black families intact under Jim Crow and that Democratic welfare policies helped destroy the black family.

House passes the first FY2025 government spending bill, for Veterans Affairs and Military Construction, despite including provisions on abortion that the White House opposes. Some of the amendments considered before final passage dealt with immigration and NATO funding.
