Washington Today (6-6-24): President Biden at D-Day 80th Anniv. says Germany then is like Russia now

World leaders gather near the beaches of Normandy, France on this 80th Anniversary of D-Day, the pivotal military operation during World War II to defeat Nazi Germany. There is praise for the brave soldiers who fought that day, some of whom attended today's ceremonies, and warnings about modern-day authoritarian threats, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

We hear from President Joe Biden, French President Emanuel Macron, King Charles III of Great Britain, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and some of the U.S. Members of Congress who traveled to France.

Plus Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) speaks at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia and Elliot 'Toby' Roosevelt III, great-grandson of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt gives remarks at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is asked about the chances Russia will take military action against NATO member countries in the next few years.

U.S. State Department is asked about an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza where Palestinians were sheltering that killed over 30 people, including women and children. The Israeli military says Hamas militants were operating inside the school.

Former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon is given until July 1 to finish any appeals on his sentence for contempt of Congress for not responding to a Congressional subpoena. If he is unsuccessful on appeal, he must report to jail to serve a four-month sentence.

Attorney General Merrick Garland talks about a drop in violent crime at a forum for chiefs of police.
