as posted by the channelSenate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Monday that Democrats will block any effort to extend President Trump's newly imposed 15% global tariffs beyond the temporary period allowed under federal law.
"Americans are suffering because Donald Trump is raising tariffs," he said on the Senate floor. "The American people hate the tariffs because they know it's raising their costs."
The Supreme Court ruled Friday that President Trump lacked authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose broad tariffs without congressional approval. In response, the president invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to implement a 15% global tariff.
Section 122 allows the president to impose tariffs for up to 150 days. Extending them beyond that period requires approval from Congress.
Sen. Schumer said Democrats would allow them to expire by denying Republicans the 60 votes needed in the Senate to advance legislation extending the tariffs.
"We will not extend those tariffs, and they will expire in a few months," the Democratic leader said. "And hopefully, then Republicans will join us in not allowing Trump to raise tariffs."
