2:36Now PlayingSpeaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said Democrats’ refusal to fund the Homeland Security Department was making the country less safe, pointing to the recent bomb incident in New York City over the weekend.
“They’re playing games with people’s lives,” he said at a press conference at House Republicans’ retreat in Doral, Florida.
Democrats say they will only agree to fund the agency, which also oversees FEMA, TSA and the Coast Guard, if Republicans agree to reforms to immigration enforcement operations.
“Why is FEMA unable to process new grant applications for natural disasters? Why are our airports so congested and unreliable? Why is our homeland so vulnerable to threats? The answer is simple,” Speaker Johnson said. “Because Democrats have made the conscious political decision — crazy as it is, by word and by deed — to protect criminal illegal aliens over hardworking American citizens.”
Funding for the Homeland Security Department lapsed on Feb. 14.
