Christie calls GOP leaders “lemmings”

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Monday criticized members of his own party, accusing them of prioritizing their positions over their responsibilities.

“The real lack of principle is on display every day in the House of Representatives and the United States Senate,” he said at Harvard University. “These people have become lemmings. They only do what he tells them to do — and they don’t even criticize him when he deserves it.”

The former governor, who was previously close with President Trump, spoke at the JFK Jr. Forum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, reflecting on lessons from his past leadership roles and his outlook on the future of politics.

“He put out a post yesterday, which I’m sure many of you saw,” he said referring to the president’s profanity-laced Easter Sunday post on Iran. “I’m just going to say exactly what he said: ‘You better open up the fuckin’ strait, you crazy bastards.’”

Mr. Christie criticized Republican leaders for failing to condemn the post.

“Even something as simple as saying, ‘Mr. President, those words on Easter Sunday were ill-advised’ — they can’t even do that,” he said. “They’re scared to do that. Here’s why: they care more about the title than doing the job they have.”
