YouTube Description
as posted by the channelHouse Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) called for Virginia voters to vote 'yes' in Tuesday's referendum to allow the state's legislature to institute a Democratic gerrymander of its congressional districts to counteract Republican measures in Texas, North Carolina, and other states.
"We believe it's the voters of Virginia and the people of this country who should decide which party is in the majority in the aftermath of the midterm elections," the Democratic leader said. "Not Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA sycophants."
Virginia Democrats' proposed gerrymander would give Democrats 10 likely seats in the House, with Republicans keeping one seat — a marked shift from the current 6-5 split in the state's delegation.
Democratic leaders nationally and in Virginia have said the gerrymander would be a temporary measure to respond to Texas' redistricting effort that will likely give Republicans five more seats in the Lone Star State.
"We're urging everyone to vote 'yes' to stop the MAGA power grab," Rep. Jeffries said.
