King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to make their first official state visit to the U.S., beginning April 27, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. The royal couple will travel to Washington, Virginia, and New York during their trip.

The visit takes place amid tensions between President Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the war in Iran and comes just seven months after President Trump's own visit to the United Kingdom, where he also attended a state dinner at Windsor Castle. This will be Charles’ 20th royal visit to the U.S. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, made four state visits (1957, 1976, 1991, and 2007) and four official visits as princess before ascending to the throne.

King Charles will also address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday, April 28. Invited by the congressional leaders of both the House and Senate to commemorate the 250th anniversary, the king's speech will focus on the alliance and shared history of the two nations.

Charles' speech is also the first by a British monarch in 35 years, when Queen Elizabeth II addressed the Congress after the Gulf War. The honor has also been bestowed on former British Prime Ministers Winston Churchill, Clement Attlee, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown.

Later in the day, following the king's speech to Congress, the royal couple will attend a state dinner at the White House with President Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

The royal couple will then travel to New York for several events, including meeting with families of victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. They will also visit Arlington National Cemetery and Shenandoah National Park and attend a "block party" in Virginia in celebration of America's 250th birthday. The king will then travel to Bermuda for his first official visit as monarch to a British territory.
