"Today, the very premise of patriotism is under attack. Its meaning is being narrowed, it's purpose is being distorted and we cannot let that happen," he said from the State House in Annapolis on Saturday.
The governor, who framed his speech as a counterpoint to President Trump's upcoming address on the National Mall, said nationalism and patriotism "are not interchangeable."
"Patriotism asks you to fight for values and an ideal," he said. "Today's version of nationalism asks you to fight for a person or a group."
