1:06Now PlayingSen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced Friday that he will support Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general, providing the decisive 50th vote to put him over the top for confirmation.
"Mr. Blanche is not perfect, and he will tell you this. But the choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche. It is between Mr. Blanche and another acting attorney general who may not run the department effectively under President Trump and who indeed may not be as good as Mr. Blanche," he said in a floor speech. "This puts at risk the progress made fighting violent crime, human and drug trafficking, and fraud. And this does not serve the American people well."
"This is not a referendum on President Trump. It is the decision regarding Mr. Blanche and very specific circumstances. All considered, I will vote for Mr. Blanche," he continued. "I'll be criticized for this vote. What's new? But the people of Louisiana can be assured that I worked hard to understand the issue and make the right decision."
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) joined Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) in opposing Mr. Blanche's nomination earlier Friday, meaning he could not afford to lose any more Republican votes, given Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) extended absence while he recovers from a fall.
The Alaska Republican said she did not believe Mr. Blanche would be willing to stand up to President Trump and reverse the "politicization — even weaponization" of the Justice Department that has "accelerated" under his administration.
"The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration," Sen. Murkowski said in a statement. "I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case."
With the support of Sen. Cassidy, who lost his reelection bid to a Trump-backed challenger, Mr. Blanche now has the 50 votes needed to be confirmed before senators leave town for their summer recess.
