1:30Now PlayingMilwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly beat state lawmaker and democratic socialist Francesca Hong in Wisconsin's Democratic primary for governor, which was called early Wednesday morning.
"Today, I stand before you filled with gratitude, with humility and hope, as I formally accept the Democratic nomination to be the next governor of the great state of Wisconsin," Mr. Crowley told reporters at a press conference Wednesday.
The Associated Press called the race with Mr. Crowley holding a narrow 0.4 percentage-point lead over Ms. Hong.
The results came as a shock and setback to progressives after weeks of Ms. Hong leading in the polls. Mr. Crowley's victory also followed his return to the race after briefly suspending his campaign in July.
"You know, making the decision to suspend the campaign and come back — and both of those decisions was very difficult," Mr. Crowley said. "But at the end of the day, we understood — not just my family but this community, everybody across this state — the stakes were too high."
Mr. Crowley will now face Trump-endorsed Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) in November.
