1:36Now PlayingCanada on Tuesday announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, seeking to match President Trump's levies "dollar for dollar."
"Canada must respond, and today we are in a proportionate, targeted and strategic way," Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at a news conference in Ottawa. "Today, I'm announcing that Canada will match the U.S. tariffs, dollar for dollar, rate for rate."
It's the latest escalation in the U.S.–Canada trade war following a breakdown in trade talks last week.
The Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods on Saturday.
Canada's retaliatory tariffs — which target steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics — are set to go into effect on Sept. 8.
