Arizona AG on mail-in ballot rule: "Over my dead body"

A coalition of Democratic-led states filed a new lawsuit Wednesday seeking to block a new rule from the U.S. Postal Service that imposes new ballot requirements for mail-in voting ahead of the midterms.

"This effort by the United States Postal Service and the federal government right now is a naked attempt to inject chaos and doubt into our election system right before voting starts," Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) said at a press conference in Phoenix. "States run our elections, period. Not the Postal Service and not the president, and that's why we sued."

The final rule, published by USPS last Friday, follows President Trump's March executive order seeking to tighten rules for mail-in ballots, which the president has claimed without evidence lead to widespread fraud.

"Over my dead body is that rule going to go into effect," Ms. Mayes said. "We are going to fight this tooth and nail in the courts."

The Supreme Court on Monday lifted an injunction that had blocked the rule from moving forward, determining that states did not have standing to sue because the Postal Service had not yet finalized the rule.

Now that the rule has been published, states are again seeking to block it from going into effect.
