2:10Now PlayingHealth and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reacted Wednesday to Florida's decision to move forward with plans to eliminate four vaccine requirements for children to attend school.
"We are doing science-based recommendations," he said of the Trump administration, while saying he wasn't familiar with Florida's specific proposal. "We're encouraging the states to take those recommendations, and I assume the state of Florida is doing that. These are science-based and they're putting children first, rather than the profits of pharmaceutical companies."
The proposed Florida rule would allow children to attend school without receiving immunizations for chickenpox, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type B and pneumococcal disease, some of which remain recommended by the Trump administration.
Secretary Kennedy said parents could still get those vaccines for their children and that insurance companies would cover the cost, but that vaccines should be a parental decision.
"The state is not mandating them," he said. "They should be parental choice. A parent should be able to make up their mind about medical interventions."
