Seth Moulton (D-MA) traded barbs with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday over the Pentagon's handling of the Iran war, saying the White House had failed to give Americans a clear explanation of how the conflict was preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, given its massive costs.
"So they've blockaded us, and we've blockaded their blockade?" Rep. Moulton asked the Defense secretary during a House Armed Services Committee hearing. "That's like saying 'tag, you're it.'"
Secretary Hegseth insisted that the blockade and conflict were draining Iran's treasury and forcing it to negotiate. Rep. Moulton challenged those assertions, saying the costs were not worthwhile for Americans struggling with affordability.
The Massachusetts Democrat also pressed Secretary Hegseth over his statement at a Pentagon press briefing that U.S. troops would give "no quarter, no mercy" to Iranian troops, raising concerns about a potential war crime.
The Defense secretary defended his statements: "The Department of War fights to win," he said. "We ensure that our warfighters have the rules of engagement necessary to be as effective as humanly possible, which they are."
