Col Douglas Macgregor argues that NATO is in terminal decline and likely to disintegrate, not through a formal end but by gradual collapse. He says NATO has been repeatedly “weaponized” by the U.S. for missions unrelated to its original defensive purpose—such as Yugoslavia/Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria—creating long-term damage, especially in the Balkans, and eroding trust among European members. According to him, NATO members often joined these wars not out of conviction but to maintain U.S. favor, clinging to the illusion that America would later come to their rescue.

He contends the Ukraine war has exposed these contradictions and accelerated NATO’s decay, reinforcing false beliefs that the U.S. will fight major wars on behalf of European states. He argues that large-scale military power is no longer the main tool of influence; economic productivity is, and alliances built for the Cold War no longer fit today’s world. He dismisses claims that Russia seeks to conquer Europe or that China is a traditional communist threat, arguing Western thinking is stuck in the past.

If NATO collapses, he expects Europe to reorganize into regional, culturally aligned security zones rather than chaos. He believes new arrangements will emerge naturally, driven by geography, history, and economic interests, especially if leaders prioritize avoiding confrontation and doing business rather than conflict.

On Iran, he warns the U.S. is likely heading toward outright war—possibly soon—based on expanded target sets that include leadership killings, infrastructure destruction, and preemptive strikes. He criticizes this as unconstitutional and dangerous, driven by wishful thinking that protests could topple the Iranian regime. He claims those efforts failed, partly due to Russian and Chinese support to Iran, leaving Washington with military escalation as the remaining option, which he views as deeply reckless.
