You Think You're Middle Class. You're Not. And Democrats Need to Start Saying That NOW

Most Americans calling themselves "middle class" are wrong — not because they're lazy, not because they made bad choices, but because they've been systematically robbed since 1981.

Here's the real test: If you rent, and you owe more on your credit cards, student loans, or auto loans than you have in savings — you are the working poor. Not middle class. Poor. And that's not on you.

Since Ronald Reagan took office, this country has overseen the largest upward transfer of national wealth in world history. The minimum wage has sat at $7.25 since 2009. If you work 40 hours a week at that rate, you are living in poverty — by definition. Now, with Biden-era Obamacare subsidies expired, the Wall Street Journal reports 10% of enrollees have already quit coverage. Another 17% don't expect to have insurance by the end of the year.

The greatest generation wasn't ashamed to say they were poor. That honesty is what built the social safety net. Democrats need to find that honesty again — and so do we.
