John "Boxer" Mendoza recalled his early life of crime and his involvement in a gang. As a juvenile, he began committing burglaries and robberies, even victimizing his own neighbors. He got caught eventually, partly due to carelessly dropping mail at a scene of a burglary. His crimes escalated, resulting in stints in juvenile detention, where he also struggled with a heroin addiction. A probation officer made efforts to rehabilitate him, understanding his struggles as a young drug addict. Mendoza further shared his early gang experiences, explaining how he was naively indoctrinated into the Norteno gang culture. He confessed that he didn’t fully understand the consequences of his affiliations or actions. Many people became victims just by wearing the wrong color, like a blue baseball cap, even if they were not involved in any gang activity.
