Nicholas Irving, a seasoned military veteran, shared his chilling observations about death. He debunked the Hollywood myth of people dying with their eyes closed, recounting that, in his experience, people die in a state of shock. When asked about the dying person's facial expression, Irving described it as one of terror, signifying that whatever the deceased were seeing was something beyond the world we inhabit. He was struck by the seemingly universal look of fear, regardless of the person's belief system or allegiance. Irving speculated about the nature of death, connecting it to his religious belief that every person has to traverse the 'underworld,' or 'hell,' potentially as a form of spiritual cleansing, before transitioning to the afterlife. He likened death to the military concept of being 'baptized by fire'—a harrowing trial that one must endure to progress.
