He had previously told athlete Colin Kaepernick to "leave the politics alone as far as your job" and "do your job and play sports." Strawberry has faced backlash for perceived attempts to silence athletes speaking out on social and political issues. However, he explained his comments stemmed from understanding sports careers are short and political stances can impact those careers. He cited Kaepernick's absence from football after his public protest as evidence. Strawberry also shared his pride in his children's professional sports and college careers, stating he didn't want them "to get lost" in the lifestyle. Despite his children's successes, he was most proud of them for obtaining college degrees, something he did not achieve.
