On December 9, 2024, Robert L. Brooks was brutally beaten to death by correction officers long rumored to be part of a “beatdown squad.” Prosecutors detailed how Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina crossed the line from corrections staff to violent offenders — ultimately pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter and accepting 22-year sentences instead of risking trial.
Two additional officers — Michael Mashaw and David Walters — pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, receiving sentences ranging from 2⅓ to 9 years behind bars.
All four were given the opportunity to speak before sentencing.
All four declined.
