1:17Now PlayingIDAHO FALLS - The number of car crashes on highway 20 continues to drop, and the Idaho transportation department says it’s because of new interchanges installed over the past few years.
“(It’s) very much safer. We like highway 20 and we feel the speed limit is about right,” local Merlin Frei said.
Travelers say changes, like an increase in speed limit, have helped with their commute.
“I’m on the highway pretty much everyday and I feel like it runs smoother, and it’s been great for me.”
Idaho State Police says every time an interchange is added, the number of car wrecks declines.
Before the Hitt Road and St. Leon exits were added, crashes happened all the time.
“Every after noon they’d be responding to crashes on highway 20, I mean every afternoon,” Sibus said.
According to a release serious injury crashes have decreased from around 80 in 2000 to 40 in 2015. No fatalities were reported form 2011 to 2014.
The Idaho Falls Transportation Department will soon advertise for bids on the Thornton interchange, and plan to construct it spring of 2016.
Once complete, officials say the addition will close five dangerous crossings.
