East Idaho Eats: Freddy's celebrates by serving 91-cent custard

STAND UP – I’m Natalia Hepworth in Idaho Falls, and our Freddy’s location is celebrating the 91st birthday of co-founder Freddy Simon, so that means customers can get custard for only 91 cents.

SOT: “91-cent custard, it’s a single custard in a dish or a cone. 91 being his birthday, you know years that he is old, and so we’re going to charge 91 cents,” General Manager, Coy Davis says.

VO: Freddy’s is a fast-casual restaurant franchise that started in Wichita, Kansas. The restaurant's theme is based around the 1940's and early 50's and specializes in cook to order steakburgers.

SOT: “So your steak burger is going to be your ground sirloin… We kinda developed a concept where they used to do back in Kansas where you mash the patty down to where you have a thin edge, and kind of a plump middle,” Davis says.

SOT: “Fries are good, fry sauce is great, burger is juicy that’s always good,” Hansen said.

VO: Freddy often visits his restaurants nationwide. He knows he can’t be everywhere for his birthday, but he’s given customers the next best thing.

SOT: “He can’t be at every location to celebrate this, and so we have our little cutouts in our lobby for people to take pictures with,” Davis said. “He’s just an old war veteran that cares a lot about the food industry.”

SOT: “I just want to invite everybody out and just have a good time, especially during Freddy’s birthday,” Davis says.
