We have British culture secretary Lisa Nandandy who told CNN this week that uh they aren't so sure over in the UK that they should approve this big, you know, Paramount, Warner, Discovery, all that merger because we're pretty sure in the UK that destroys all competition and is essentially, get this, a monopoly. However, being British, she said it far more eloquently than I just put it. Lisa Nandy said, quote, "Following engagement with the parties and independent research, my department has today written to the current and proposed owners of Warner Brothers Discovery on my behalf to inform them that I am minded to intervene."
Now, that may be probably the most British statement I've ever had to read because again, it's very eloquent. It's very proper. There's a lot of unnecessary words like, "I am disincined to acquies to your request." But basically what she's saying is, "All right, listen up Warner Brothers Discovery and Paramount. This ain't cool. You're about to kill all the competition, right? This is an illegal monopoly by every possible way. You better submit to me within the next like 3 days is how long they had to respond. Why I should not open a formal investigation into this crap because I got to tell you I am inclined to do that.
Again, far more eloquent than I was able to say it. But the US didn't do that, right? Because Paramount is owned by the Ellisons, which Donald Trump donors, you know, good friends with them. So, yes, you can gobble up all of the media in our country. We don't care. Here's CBS. Here's Warner Brothers. Here's Discovery. You know, throw in some HBO there, too. Hell, you want a couple of radio stations out in the Midwest? Take those as well. Why not, you know, let's just have it all owned by one single person because there's no way that's going to go badly for consumers.
And meanwhile, the UK is like, whoa, hold the hell up. Yeah, this doesn't seem right at all. Problem is, this shouldn't have had to happen in the UK at all. It should have been stopped here in the United States. We have entire governmental departments that deal with only this type of thing. There is an entire department at the Department of Justice that is supposed to stop [ __ ] like this. They didn't do anything at all. They didn't even bother to look at it or think for a second, maybe this is an illegal monopoly. we shouldn't do it.
