22:32Now PlayingThe extent to which Vatican 2 is continuous or discontinuous with the prior Catholic tradition has been a matter of fierce debate since the time of the council itself. Debates that began on the council floor have continued in the 60 years since the council, and one of the most contentious documents of the council both then and now is the document "Dignitatis Humanae" which covers the topic of religious freedom.
In this video, I explain the substance of the controversy, show the previous teachings it is in tension with, unpack the theological principles that allowed for such marked discontinuity, share why I think this is actually a good document, and finally, address some pitfalls to the interpretation I put forth.
So, despite the spicy title and thumbnail, I hope you come to see by the end of the video, that I actually find this document to be quite a hopeful sign of the Catholic Church's ability to reform.
