Case Background: The case of North Dakota vs. Nichole Rice centers on the murder of 18-year-old Anita Knutson, a Minot State University student, who was found stabbed to death in her off-campus apartment in Minot, North Dakota, on June 4, 2007. At the time, Knutson shared the apartment with her roommate, 19-year-old Nichole Thomas (now Nichole Rice). The case remained a COLD CASE for nearly 15 years until Rice’s arrest on March 16, 2022, when she was charged with Knutson’s murder. This break in the case was the result of the Minot Police reaching out to Kelly Siegler and her Cold Justice team. Siegler, a former Harris County, Texas, prosecutor with extensive experience in murder cases, joined the investigation as the "Cold Justice" team tackled it as their 100th case.
Siegler’s involvement provided logistical support, expert consultations, and a structured approach that helped the Minot PD refocus their efforts. Chief Klug credited "Cold Justice" with enabling them to pull together existing information and pay attention to fine details, which had been challenging due to prior staffing and timing constraints. This collaboration culminated in a breakthrough: on March 16, 2022, Nichole Rice, Knutson’s former roommate, was arrested and charged with murder. Siegler noted the cooperative nature of the witnesses and the dedication of the Minot PD, emphasizing the emotional weight of working on a case involving a beloved young victim.
Nichole's trial started with Opening Statements on March 18th, 2025 and resulted in a verdict on March 26th, 2025.
