Case Background: In late January 2025, retired Green Beret and Special Forces veteran Clinton "Clint" Bonnell, 50, was reported missing in Cumberland County, North Carolina, after failing to attend a class. A welfare check at the home he shared with his wife, Shana Cloud, 50, revealed he hadn't returned the night before.
Weeks later, in February 2025, dismembered human remains were discovered in a rural pond. DNA confirmed they belonged to Bonnell, who had been shot multiple times. Prosecutors allege Shana Cloud killed him shortly after he informed her of his intent to divorce—having already consulted a lawyer and told his girlfriend—then dismembered and concealed the body to cover up the crime.
Shana Cloud, a former traveling nurse, was arrested in late March 2025 and charged with first-degree murder and concealment/destruction of human remains. She has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond. In February 2026 a Cumberland County grand jury indicted Shana Cloud on charges of first-degree murder and destruction/concealment of human remains. The indictment was entered into Superior Court on February 12th, 2026, advancing the case from district to superior court for pretrial proceedings. An administrative setting is scheduled for April 1st, 2026, with a full trial likely in 2027.
