Hawk looks at polling on American attitudes toward the Israeli government and asks what the US-Israel relationship looks like three years from now. Among Democratic voters overall, disapproval of the current Israeli government and the US relationship with it is running around 80%. Among Democrats under 49, it exceeds 90%. What is newer is that a solid majority of Republican voters now also disapprove, with that number rising sharply among Republicans under 50.
Hawk connects that shift directly to Benjamin Netanyahu's decision roughly a decade ago to stop being bipartisan and go all in on Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party, openly dismissing Democratic elected officials in the process. That calculation is now backfiring. Netanyahu's support among Republicans is collapsing alongside his support among Democrats, driven in part by the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the Iran war that has cost the average American household between $1,000 and $1,300 in additional fuel costs since March.
Hawk also addresses AIPAC's reach into American elections at every level, the NYC Democratic primaries where establishment candidates lost and voters were called antisemitic in response, and Trump's own statement to Netanyahu that the United States is Israel's last ally. He argues that Netanyahu's decision to torpedo Trump's Iran deal by continuing to fight in Lebanon is the final act of a leader who made the strategic error of tying Israel's most important alliance to one man and one political movement, and that everything Donald Trump touches eventually dies.
