Hawk has argued for a while that the country might have been better off in several specific ways if Donald Trump had won reelection in 2020. He notes that Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan's new book on Trump's second term apparently makes a similar case in one section.
The argument is not about Biden or Harris. It is about what that four-year gap made possible. Trump used the time out of office primarily to avoid going to prison, but the people around him, particularly Stephen Miller and the Heritage Foundation, used it to build Project 2025 into what it became by 2024. None of that planning happens if Trump is already sitting in a second term dealing with COVID's Delta variant, supply chain failures, and inflation, all of which would have landed on him directly. The Jack Smith indictments don't happen. The crypto ventures that have transferred somewhere between three to five billion dollars from buyers into the Trump family's net worth don't happen. Pete Hegseth doesn't become Secretary of Defense. Todd Blanche doesn't become attorney general. The tech industry bribes surrounding the inauguration fund don't happen.
Most importantly, Hawk argues, if Trump had won in 2020, we would be done with him right now. His second term would have ended a year and a half ago. The question he leaves open is where the country, the world, and the collective mental health of everyone paying attention would be if that had been the case.
