A late Sunday night scroll through TikTok sends Hawk back to graduating high school in 1986, when the great divide in 80s music split everyone into camps. As a committed metalhead raised on Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, and Queensryche, the New Wave and post-punk of the era was everything he could not stand at the time.
Nearly 40 years later, the appreciation has arrived. The Cure playing Just Like Heaven, Johnny Marr's guitar work with The Smiths, Rio and Girls on Film by Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, and the early INXS records all land differently at 58. The two offbeat snare and crash combinations in Modern English's I Melt With You get singled out as the exact detail that made the song work at all.
There are also the stories from decades of playing San Francisco stages, including opening for Modern English at Cafe du Nord in the Castro and for Naked Eyes at the dearly missed Red Devil Lounge on Polk Street, not realizing until mid set exactly who the headliner was.
