The three-way Democratic primary for Michigan's open United States Senate seat narrowed on Sunday when state Senator Mallory McMorrow, a widely viewed rising star running a consistent distant third, dropped out of the race. That leaves establishment and AIPAC-backed candidate Haley Stevens against progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, who has led in the polls despite being outspent by AIPAC by as much as 30 to 1 and in some parts of the state by 200 or 300 to 1.
The matchup mirrors what has already played out this primary season. AIPAC-backed establishment Democrats went 0 for 3 in the New York City primaries, losing two incumbents to progressive pro-Palestinian challengers, and a 15-term incumbent in Colorado lost to a candidate critical of Israel.
Michigan is significant because Dearborn has a large Muslim and Palestinian population with real political power and deep personal ties to the losses in Gaza. With Democratic disapproval of the current Israeli government and AIPAC running as high as 80 to 90 percent among younger voters, AIPAC is expected to pour tens of millions more into this race to protect its own interests.
