Former Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema is being sued by the wife of a man she hired to her security detail in 2022. The claim is alienation of affection, a tort North Carolina is one of the last states to still recognize, which is why the case sits there rather than in Arizona.
Hawk's interest is less in the affair than in the litigation strategy. The suit reportedly seeks damages just above the threshold that puts a case in federal court. Sinema sat for a deposition on July 31st, and its contents are now public.
That is the part that does not add up. A former senator with post Senate earning power let a comparatively small case reach the deposition stage rather than settling it, and the result is a transcript full of detail that settling would have kept private. If it does not settle now, there is a trial, and federal courtrooms have no cameras but plenty of sketch artists.
The advice in the title is the whole analysis.
