Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik appeared before a closed-door House committee to answer questions about his personal and financial ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Lutnik, who lived next door to Epstein in Manhattan, had previously given a detailed account claiming he and his wife attended one dinner at Epstein's home in 2005, were disturbed by what they saw, and never had contact with Epstein again.
The Epstein files released earlier this year tell a different story. Documents show Lutnik, his wife, their four children, and nannies traveled to Epstein Island in 2012 for lunch with Epstein — years after Epstein became a registered sex offender for having sex with minors. Republican House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer stated Lutnik was not truthful in his testimony and accused him of participating in a cover-up.
Meanwhile, figures across the political spectrum named in the Epstein files — including Larry Summers, Bill Gates, Kevin Warsh, Warsh's father-in-law, and former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, who gave Epstein a sweetheart plea deal — have all faced some form of accountability. Attorney General Pam Bondi spent her tenure shielding Trump from Epstein-related exposure and was fired for it.
Trump, who maintained a close personal and financial relationship with Epstein for 15 to 20 years, has faced zero consequences despite credible accusations of serious crimes. All of this while his supporters, who were fed the QAnon narrative about Democratic child trafficking rings, continue to back him unconditionally.
