In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 11 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).

After the gains made by the African American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s, the push for civil rights expanded to other groups in America as well.

Women used many of the same tactics employed by the civil rights movement in order to achieve their goals. Their work began in earnest with the publication of Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique which was expanded in the work of Gloria Steinem in Ms. Magazine. Their push for abortion rights came to fruition in the landmark decision Roe v Wade, but their push for an Equal Rights Amendment fell short of the required votes to ratify it, largely thanks to the counter efforts of conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly.

Other groups fought for civil rights during this period as well. Latino agricultural workers went on strike for better wages thanks to the organization and leadership of Cesar Chavez. And the gay rights movement began in earnest with the resistance to the raid at the Stonewall Inn.
