The Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) was a war between the Russian Empire and the Japanese Empire. During the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1885) Japan had defeated the Qing Dynasty. However, after the Boxer Rebellion Russia kept its troops in Manchuria and seized Port Arthur. In 1904 Japan declared war on Russia. Tsar Nicholas II of Russia believed in an easy victory, yet Russia suffered many defeats. During the Battle of the Yalu River, the Battle of Nanshan, the Battle of Te-Li-Ssu, the Battle of the Yellow Sea, the Battle of Liaoyang and the Siege of Port Arthur Russia suffered defeat after defeat. After the naval defeat during the Battle of Tsushima Russia lost its will to fight on and the war between Russia and Japan was ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth. Meanwhile, the Russian Revolution of 1905 had broken out...
