0:53Now PlayingGaza in WW1. The First Battle of Gaza occurred during the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I on 26 March, 1917. It was a pivotal engagement in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign between the British Empire, led by General Archibald Murray, and the Ottomans and Germans, commanded by General Kress von Kressenstein. British forces, consisting of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, attempted to capture Gaza, a strategic town. Despite initial success in taking the outer defenses, they failed to seize the town itself due to miscommunication and a lack of coordination. This setback marked a missed opportunity for the British and resulted in a costly stalemate. The First Battle of Gaza set the stage for further battles in the region, highlighting the challenging desert conditions and the tenacity of Ottoman forces. A month later there was a second battle for Gaza.
