As part of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union celebrated their newfound alliance with a joint display of military might after they had overrun most of Poland.
The parade began at 16:00 and "Victory Arches" were created which the Red Army troops decorated with swastikas and communist symbols, through which German troops marched. The Soviet and German generals paid homage to each other's armies and their respective victories over Polish forces. The parade symbolized their combined strength and strategic alignment. This event underscored the cynical political maneuvering behind the scenes, as two ideologically opposed regimes temporarily set aside their differences in pursuit of their own interests.
The city of Brest and notably its fortress would see heavy combat in the initial stages of Operation Barbarossa when Hitler ordered the invasion of the USSR.
