However, in Berlin, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels briefly assumed control as Chancellor, marking the existence of the Third Reich's so-called "Second Cabinet." Goebbels, fiercely loyal to the Führer, had little interest in governing a collapsing state. His cabinet included loyalists like Martin Bormann and Wilhelm Burgdorf, though many ministers were either dead, absent, or powerless. With Berlin under siege by Soviet forces, the government operated from the Führerbunker, focusing on futile attempts to delay the inevitable defeat. Goebbels’ tenure lasted just one day. On May 1, 1945, he facilitated his masters’s instructions, attempted to negotiate peace terms that were promptly rejected, and ultimately chose to not be captured alive...
